STATE CAPITOL, PHOENIX – Today House Minority Leader Chad Campbell, D-Phoenix (District 14), renewed his call for Ken Bennett to resign as the co-chair of Republican Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign in Arizona or resign as secretary of state.
“Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett is not doing himself or the state any favors by his continued comments about President Barack Obama’s birthplace. If he wants to spend his time exploring conspiracy theories, that is fine, but his comments show a serious lack of propriety. He refuses to give up one of his jobs. It is absolutely inappropriate for him to be the co-chair of Romney’s presidential campaign in Arizona and the secretary of state,” Campbell said.
Campbell’s statement follows comments Bennett made at a recent meeting of state legislative district 12 Republicans. During that meeting, Bennett claimed he believes Obama was “fibbing about being born in Kenya when he was trying to get into college.”
“This most recent incident shows me that he is more interested in using his position as the state’s chief election officer to promote his strange theories about Obama’s birth and his preferred presidential candidate than serving the state. It is inexcusable and we’re still waiting for Bennett to resign one of his jobs,” Campbell said.
