STATE CAPITOL, PHOENIX – Assistant House Minority Leader Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Phoenix (District 27), released the following statement on efforts to prevent future mulch fires, like the one that recently affected air quality in Laveen.
“Residents from Laveen have expressed great concern about the smoke from the mulch fire. It presented a possible risk for people with respiratory problems and young children. It also made it difficult for anyone in the area to enjoy the community. This fire threatened people’s health and their quality of life.
“I’ve been meeting with representatives from Maricopa County and the City of Phoenix, as well as people in the business community to find ways to prevent fires like this in the future. We can’t just focus on what went wrong in this situation. We have to find ways to stop this from happening in the future. We also need to develop faster and more efficient responses to fires like this.
“I’m confident that through continued cooperation, we can and will find ways to learn from this incident and improve.”
