STATE CAPITOL, PHOENIX – Rep. Mark Cardenas, D-Phoenix (District 19), released the following statement regarding the Department of Veterans Affairs' decision not to renew a grant application by Central Arizona Shelter Services, Inc.:

"I am deeply disheartened by the VA's decision. CASS depends heavily on this grant for funding, and it would be simply unconscionable to end support for such an important organization and to turn veterans back out onto the street.

"As a veteran, I know what organizations like CASS mean to returning soldiers. I won't sit by as a program that helps vets get back on their feet and overcome the many challenges they face just shuts down. These individuals served their country and they deserve better. It is paramount that this facility remains open and, to ensure that, the VA must revisit its grant renewal decision. I hope the VA and others who hear about this situation will do what they can to help."
