PHOENIX – It has taken a decade of collaborative effort and work, but the air is now officially clean in northwest Yuma County. Representative Mariana Sandoval, who represents the area, today praised the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality for working with local, state Tribal and federal partners on a successful plan to achieve federal air quality standards announced last week. The Northwest Yuma County region had been out of compliance, but improving, since the National Ambient Air Quality Standards were designated in 2015.

"This is an important milestone -- not just because we are the first nonattainment area in the Southwest to reverse our designation and what that means for the health and safety of our residents – but because it's a building block and pathway for other communities to do the same. Success breeds success. I am passionate about fighting for clean air and clean water for the constituents I serve, but I want that for all Arizona communities that struggle with unhealthy levels of ozone and other pollutants."
