Arizona House Democratic Caucus statement on murder of George Floyd and nationwide protests

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 29, 2020

PHOENIX – House Democratic Co-Whip Reginald Bolding released the following statement regarding the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers, and the resulting protests demanding justice for this crime and countless others like it.

"George Floyd was murdered. The video evidence of his pleas for his life and the callous indifference of his killers is sickening and undeniable. His murderers should not be allowed to escape justice because they were police officers," said House Democratic Co-Whip Reginald Bolding, D-Phoenix.

"Our caucus stands with the people of Minnesota, and with the family and loved ones of George Floyd, who are crying out for justice and an end to the systemic racism that prevents our country from being truly united states.

We abhor violence and injustice of any kind. But we know all too well that the scales of justice are not equal in this country and in this state, and that must change.

As an African American male, I have been targeted without cause and questioned by police. For me it was for driving a car that was too nice for my demographic. Virtually any person of color in this community can tell similar stories, and we urge you to share them with us. These incidents are not isolated, and we are sick and tired of mourning for those who do not survive the encounters – Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Philando Castile, Sandra Bland, Antonio Arce, and the list goes on.

It is long past time for our country to live up to the ideals of equality and justice professed in our Declaration of Independence and Constitution. We will not rest until we get there."
